Open Burning

Regulations& Recreational Fire Guidelines

Open burning activities are regulated by the City of Brookings Code of Ordinances and enforced by the fire and police departments. Recreational fires are permitted under the conditions found in the Guidelines for Open Burning below. These guidelines are established to prevent fire damage resulting from open burning activities that get out of control, prevent the discharge of pollutants into the atmosphere and to protect others from hazardous or undesirable smoke conditions.

Offender Consequences

First-time offenders of the open burning ordinance are typically issued a copy of the Guidelines for Open Burning and are advised to follow them in the future. Repeat offenders or offenders maintaining fires that are hazardous can be issued a citation and fined.
