City of Brookings Continues to Take Measures to Prevent Coronavirus Spread

Brookings, S.D. (9/3/2020) – On Wednesday, September 3 the Brookings City Council adopted Ordinance 20-017 which amends Ordinance 20-010 to extend continued safety measures and requirements for an additional period of sixty (60) days to slow the community spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Brookings City Council also heard a first reading on Ordinance 20-019. The council struck two amendments – restricting social gatherings of more than 10 people in residences and prohibiting alcohol sales from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The council retained two amendments – regarding mask mandates. One mandate would require all individuals attending or working events which require a City permit to wear a mask unless social distancing can be maintained. The second mandate would require all individuals to wear a mask in indoor businesses and indoor public places unless social distancing can be maintained. Exceptions are those under the age of five (5) and those with a medical condition, mental health condition, or disability that makes it unreasonable for the individual to maintain a face covering.

The second reading of Ordinance 20-019 is set for Tuesday, September 8.
