Love Our Health Care Workers

December 16, 2020

The Brookings community was challenged to cut, write, create and mail at least 1,000 paper hearts to fill the Brookings Hospital Inpatient Care waiting room windows to show appreciation for our health care workers. On December 16, more than 1,777+ hearts were delivered, filling the windows and overflowing to other areas of the hospital spreading messages of love, hope and kindness. The featured mural is named Sisu and was painted by Ashley Biggar. "Sisu" is a Finnish word which closely translated is a combination of extraordinary determination, courage and resoluteness in the face of extreme adversity. Check out this downtown mural in person on the Brookings Register alley wall by Nick's Hamburger Shop (corner of Main Avenue & 5th Street).

Buy local and support small business owners, the people who are our neighbors! Many businesses have an option to purchase through their website, Facebook, via a phone call or through email which means you can support local even from the safety of your home!

♥ Order Takeout or Delivery
Many local restaurants have curbside pickup or delivery options. Order from your favorite restaurant or try somewhere new! As long as you don’t have to cook, it will be delicious!

♥ Purchase Gift Cards
Purchase a gift card to use later or to give to someone special. Buy "future you" a date night, shopping spree, or lunch with friends!

♥ Avoid Paying with Cash
Limit the risk of exposure to employees. Credit, debit, and contactless options like Apple Pay are great ways to eliminate touching key pads or handling cash. Plus, these transactions are usually faster, getting you in and out quickly!

♥ Write Good Reviews & Post On Social Media
Help spread the good word! Write positive reviews online of your favorite local businesses. Facebook, Google and Yelp are all great sources to write reviews. Follow, Like, Share, Comment and spread the news of your local businesses to all of your followers!

♥ Be Understanding
We are in unprecedented times. Be understanding. Know that each business is different and they are doing what’s best for them. Reach out to business owners or employees to ask how they are doing, or to simply let them know you support their decisions. It means a lot!
