Responsibilities
The Public Works Department provides for a broad range of services and is comprised of three divisions – Street, Engineering, and Solid Waste. Through the three divisions, the Public Works Department provides essential services to the City of Brookings, which include engineering services, stormwater management, street maintenance, snow removal, mosquito control, garbage/recycling/yard waste collection, Brookings Regional Landfill, and Brookings Regional Airport. In addition to essential services, the Public Works Department coordinates community favorite events to include the annual Spring Clean-Up and paint exchange.
The Public Works Department was created in October 2020. The creation of Public Works and consolidation of the Street, Engineering, and Solid Waste Divisions within one department allows for increased cooperation, collaboration, and resource maximization as well as other efficiency and effectiveness improvements.
