COVID-19: Brookings County

The South Dakota Department of Health COVID-19 page is updated daily and has confirmed:

  • Total Cases: 3,571
  • Recovered Individuals: 3,476
  • Active Cases: 59
  • Spread Category: Substantial

COVID-19: Brookings Thresholds

UPDATED: February 19, 2021

  1. Is the epidemic controlled? No. Rt was above 1.0 for 7 of the last 14 days and community spread remains substantial.
  2. Is the health system able to cope with a resurgence of COVID-19 cases that may arise after adapting some measures? Based on current census, Brookings Health System feels they can handle the lowest of the anticipated numbers (n = 1). However, staffing will be challenged, thereby limiting the ability to sustain care for the long-term, with the highest anticipated number (n = 6).
  3. Is the public health surveillance system able to detect and manage the cases and their contacts, and identify a resurgence of cases in Brookings?
    a. Mitigation Level: Yes, according to BHS data (includes sentinel testing, multiple tests on same person and possibly nonresidents of Brookings County) and state data using tests done as denominator (not unique people tested).
    b. Suppression Level: No, test positivity range is 3%-17% based on state data and 5% based on BHS data.
    c. Approximate Time to Receive Test Results: 1 to 2 days

Brookings County (moderate spread is 4-33 new cases per week; substantial spread is 34+ cases per week)

  • 3,571 cases:  29 this week vs. 47 in previous week (SD-DOH still have Brookings as substantial spread since it uses the last two weeks)
  • 59 active cases
  • Test positivity among people tested (13%) & among tests done (3%); percent test positivity based on PCR tests only (DOH dashboard = 3%)
  • Largest percent increase in cases this past week was among individuals aged 50-59 years (2%, total of 6 cases)
  • 124 ever hospitalized:  2 new admission this week vs. 1 in previous week
  • 36 total deaths – 1 this week vs. 0 death in previous week
  • 11.5% of Brookings residents have received 1+ vaccines and 5.7% are fully vaccinated
  • Cumulative cases and cases over the last week per 100,000 population is given for counties with the 10 most populous cities (three slides)
  • Brookings County mobility data was not updated this week

South Dakota (substantial spread is 864+ new cases per week)

  • 111,808 cases: 1,173 this week vs. 1,055 in previous week 1,891 active cases
  • 22% of cases this past week were among individuals aged 60+ years
  • Test positivity among people tested (23%) & among tests done (5%); percent test positivity based on PCR tests only (DOH dashboard = 3%)
  • 6,570 ever hospitalized: 104 admissions this week vs. 69 in previous week
  • 102 people currently hospitalized (17 in ICU) 
  • 1,864 deaths:  20 this week vs. 29 in previous week 
  • 18.4% of South Dakotans have received 1+ vaccines and 9.4% are fully vaccinated
  • 12.6% of South Dakotans have tested positive (10.2% of Brookings County residents): highest age group is 20-29% (17.0% for SD & 14.1% for Brookings)
  • Overall, 5.9% of South Dakotans who have tested positive have been hospitalized ranging from 1.0% in <20 year olds to 27.8% in 80+ year olds.
  • Overall case fatality rate (percent of people testing positive for COVID who die) is 1.7% and ranges from less than 1% in individuals less than 60 years of age and increases to 20.4% in individuals aged 80+ years
  • Cumulative number of cases for K-12 and higher education: 9,577 & 3,428 cases in K-12 students & staff and 3,126 & 558 cases in higher ed students & staff (note: previous data have only included cases confirmed by PCR; current data includes probable [antigen test] cases and past data have been updated).
  • Deaths over time and from various causes (three slides) are provided, but have not been updated (done by SD-DOH monthly).
  • South Dakota mobility data was not updated this week


  • 28.9 million cases: 525,178 new cases this week vs. 484,006 million in previous week
  • 515,410 total deaths:  15,419 deaths this week vs. 16,791 in previous week


  • 112.8 million cases: 2.80 million cases this week vs. 2.18 million in previous week
  • 2.50 million deaths: 71,876 deaths this week vs. 64,913 in previous week
