COVID-19: Brookings County

The South Dakota Department of Health COVID-19 page is updated daily and has confirmed:

  • Total Cases: 4,212
  • Recovered Individuals: 4,151
  • Active Cases: 24
  • Spread Category: Moderate




COVID-19: Brookings Thresholds

UPDATED: May 14, 2021

  1. Is the epidemic controlled? Yes.  Rt was below 1.0 for all of the last 14 days; community spread is currently moderate per DOH definition based on last two weeks of cases.
  2. Is the health system able to cope with a resurgence of COVID-19 cases that may arise after adapting some measures? Brookings Health System feels they can handle the anticipated numbers (n = 0 to 1).
  3. Is the public health surveillance system able to detect and manage the cases and their contacts, and identify a resurgence of cases in Brookings?
    a. Mitigation Level: Yes, according to BHS data (includes sentinel testing, multiple tests on same person, non-county residents) and state data using tests done and unique people tested.
    b. Suppression Level: Yes, test positivity is 3% based on BHS data and for state data there is a range of 1% based on tests done to 7% based on unique individuals tested.
    c. Approximate Time to Receive Test Results: 1 to 2 days
    d. Percent of Brookings population aged 16 years or older that has received at least one vaccine as of 5/12/21: 48%

COVID-19: Local, Regional, and National Weekly Summary

UPDATED: May 12, 2021

Brookings County (substantial spread is 34+ new cases per week)

  • 4,207 cases:  9 new cases this week vs. 45 in previous week (in moderate spread)
  • 30 active cases (down from 71 last week)
  • Test positivity among people tested (7%) & among tests done (1%); percent test positivity based on PCR tests only (DOH dashboard = 5%)
  • Seven out of the 9 cases this past week were in the 20-39 year age group and two were among children aged less than 9 years.  
  • 158 ever hospitalized: 5 new admissions this week vs. 4 in previous week
  • 37 total deaths: 0 deaths this week vs. 0 in previous week
  • 48% of Brookings residents aged 16+ years have received 1+ vaccines and 40% are fully vaccinated (not including VA & IHS).
  • Cumulative cases per 100,000 population by week are given for counties with the 10 most populous cities (three slides; see county rankings below).  
    • Brookings County has the second lowest overall number of cases per population (Lawrence County is best).  
    • Brookings County had the second lowest number of cases in the past seven days per population out of the counties with the top 10 most populous cities.
  • Brookings County mobility data were not updated this week. 


South Dakota (substantial spread is 864+ new cases per week)

  • 123,497 cases: 424 new cases this week vs. 675 in previous week (in moderate spread)
  • 1,004 active cases (1,385 last week)
  • 11% of cases this past week were among individuals aged 60+ years (13% last week)
  • Test positivity among people tested (12%) & among tests done (2%); percent test positivity based on PCR tests only (DOH dashboard = 5%).
  • 7,476 ever hospitalized: 59 admissions this week vs. 80 in previous week
  • 66 people currently hospitalized vs. 102 hospitalized last week (20 in the ICU vs. 23 last week)
  • 1,988 deaths:  14 deaths this week vs. 12 in previous week 
  • 51% of South Dakotans and 52% of Brookings county residents aged 20+ years have received 1+ vaccines.  Brookings County has a higher vaccination rate in all age groups except 20-29 years. All age groups less than 60 years have less than a 70% vaccination rate. 
  • 14.0% of South Dakotans have tested positive (12.0% of Brookings County residents): the age group with the highest percentage is 20-29 years (18.7% for SD & 16.0% for Brookings) followed by 40-49 year (18.5% for SD & 15.3% for Brookings).
  • Overall, 6.0% of South Dakotans who have tested positive have been hospitalized ranging from 1.1% in the less than 20 year age group to 28.9% in 80 years and older age group.
  • Overall case fatality rate (percent of people testing positive for COVID who die) is 1.62% and ranges from less than 1% in individuals less than 60 years of age to 2.0% in the 60-69 year age group, and increasing to 20.6% in the 80 years and older age group.
  • Cumulative number of cases for K-12 and higher education: 11,739 & 3,909 cases in K-12 students & staff and 3,488 & 668 cases in higher ed students & staff.
  • Deaths over time, including through February 2021, and by causes of death (four slides) were updated (last updated by SD Dept of Health 4/11/21):
    • 2020 Total deaths (provisional) = 9,857
    • Average number of deaths/year (2010-2019) = 7,602
    • Difference between observed & average = 2,255
    • COVID deaths in 2020 per DOH dashboard = 1,488
  • South Dakota mobility data were not updated this week. 

USA

  • 33.55 million cases: 275,456 new cases this week vs. 347,568 in previous week
  • 596,946 total deaths: 4,537 deaths this week vs. 5,025 in previous week 

Worldwide

  • 160.3 million cases: 5.34 million cases this week vs. 5.65 million in previous week
  • 3.33 million deaths: 90,214 deaths this week vs. 92,490 in previous week
