COVID-19: Local, Regional, and National Weekly Summary

Weekly Updates:
Brookings County (Highest Level of Spread)
- 7,690 total cases: 464 new cases this week vs. 622 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
- 22% were under 20 years of age (vs. 26% last week)
- 46% were 20-39 years (vs. 44% last week)
- 20% were 40-59 years (vs. 24% last week)
- 12% were 60 years or older (vs. 6% last week)
- Since December 29th, the largest percentage increase in cases has been in the 0-9 year age group (54%; n=185), and the largest increase in the number of cases has been in the 20-29 year age group (n=542; 31% increase).
- 1,647 active cases (1,463 last week)
- Test positivity (PCR) this past week was 36% compared to 37% last week. You want this below 5%, and the lower, the better. With the availability of at-home testing kits, this has become more difficult to interpret.
- 197 Brookings County residents have been hospitalized with COVID: 6 new hospitalizations posted this past week compared to 9 in the previous week.
- 41 Brookings County residents have died of COVID: no deaths were reported this past week compared to no deaths in the previous week.
- 57% of Brookings County residents have received at least one vaccine, 52% have received the full vaccine series, and 23% have received a booster or third shot.
South Dakota (Highest Level of Spread)
- 222,880 cases: 10,995 new cases this week vs. 13,973 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
- 21% were under 20 years of age (vs. 22% last week)
- 35% were 20-39 years (vs. 37% last week)
- 26% were 40-59 years (vs. 27% last week)
- 18% were 60 years or older (vs. 14% last week)
- 35,534 active cases (32,761 last week)
- Test positivity (PCR) this past week was 39% compared to 40% the previous week. You want this below 5%, and the lower, the better. With the availability of at-home testing kits, this has become more difficult to interpret.
- 9,845 South Dakota residents have been admitted to in-state hospitals with COVID: 268 people were admitted to in-state hospitals this week vs. 234 last week. Of those admitted this past week:
- 4% were less than 20 years of age (vs. 4% last week)
- 22% were 20-39 years (vs. 26% last week)
- 19% were 40-59 years (vs. 23% last week)
- 55% were 60 years of age and older (vs. 47% last week)
- 396 people currently hospitalized vs. 392 hospitalized last Wednesday (76 currently in the ICU vs. 76 last week)
- 2,623 South Dakotans have died from COVID: 50 deaths were reported this week vs. 39 in the previous week. Of those who died this past week:
- 6 were 40-59 years of age
- 44 were 60 years of age & older
- 57% of South Dakota residents have received at least one vaccine, 51% have received the full vaccine series, and 22% have received a booster or third shot.
USA
- 73.44 million cases: 4.68 million new cases this week vs. 5.37 in the previous week
- 894,880 total deaths: 17,640 deaths this week vs. 13,344 in the previous week
Worldwide
- 359.1 million cases: 23.9 million cases this week vs. 21.1 million in the previous week
- 5.63 million deaths: 60,655 deaths this week vs. 51,817 in the previous week
