COVID-19: Local, Regional, and National Weekly Summary

Weekly Updates:
Brookings County (Highest Level of Spread)
- 8,056 total cases: 18 new cases this week vs. 56 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
- 61% were under 20 years of age (vs. 30% last week)
- 22% were 20-39 years (vs. 43% last week)
- 11% were 40-59 years (vs. 14% last week)
- 6% were 60 years or older (vs. 13% last week)
- Since January 26th, the largest percentage increase in cases has been in the 0-9 year age group (11%; n=56). The largest increase in the number of cases has been in the 20-29 year age group (n=118; 5% increase).
- 188 active cases (309 last week)
- Test positivity (PCR) this past week was 9% compared to 15% last week. You want this below 5%, and the lower, the better. With the availability of at-home testing kits, this has become more difficult to interpret.
- 219 Brookings County residents have been hospitalized with COVID: 3 new hospitalizations posted this past week compared to 5 in the previous week.
- 50 Brookings County residents have died of COVID: 2 deaths were reported this past week compared to 3 deaths in the previous week.
- 58% of Brookings County residents have received at least one vaccine, 53% have received the full vaccine series, and 24% have received a booster or third shot.
South Dakota (Highest Level of Spread)
- 235,541 cases: 1,849 new cases this week vs. 1,646 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
- 27% were under 20 years of age (vs. 22% last week)
- 30% were 20-39 years (vs. 31% last week)
- 22% were 40-59 years (vs. 23% last week)
- 20% were 60 years or older (vs. 24% last week)
- 6,083 active cases (9,771 last week)
- Test positivity (PCR) this past week was 13% compared to 17% the previous week. You want this below 5%, and the lower, the better. With the availability of at-home testing kits, this has become more difficult to interpret.
- 10,599 South Dakota residents have been admitted to in-state hospitals with COVID: 86 were admitted to in-state hospitals this week vs. 144 last week. Of those admitted this past week:
- 9% were less than 20 years of age (vs. 8% last week)
- 15% were 20-39 years (vs. 13% last week)
- 11% were 40-59 years (vs. 21% last week)
- 65% were 60 years of age and older (vs. 58% last week)
- 171 people currently hospitalized vs. 240 hospitalized last Wednesday (32 currently in the ICU vs. 48 last week)
- 2,784 South Dakotans have died from COVID: 26 deaths were reported this week vs. 52 in the previous week. Of those who died this past week:
- 1 were 20-39 years
- 4 were 40-59 years of age
- 21 were 60 years of age & older
- 58% of South Dakota residents have received at least one vaccine, 52% have received the full vaccine series, and 23% have received a booster or third shot.
USA
- 80.27 million cases: 630,629 new cases this week vs. 1.08 in the previous week
- 963,371 total deaths: 14,102 deaths this week vs. 16,826 in the previous week

- 427.9 million cases: 12.1 million cases this week vs. 14.8 million in the previous week
