COVID-19: Local, Regional, and National Weekly Summary

Weekly Updates:

Brookings County (Highest Level of Spread)

  • 8,064 total cases:  8 new cases this week vs. 18 in the previous week.  Of the new cases this past week:
    • 12.5% were under 20 years of age (vs. 61% last week)
    • 12.5% were 20-39 years (vs. 22% last week)
    • 25% were 40-59 years (vs. 11% last week)
    • 50% were 60 years or older (vs. 6% last week)
  • Since February 16th, the largest percentage increase and the number of cases increased have been in the 0-9 year age group (2%; n=9).  
  • 221 Brookings County residents have been hospitalized with COVID: 2 new hospitalizations posted this past week compared to 3 in the previous week. Currently, the percentage of staffed beds that are COVID-occupied in the Sioux Empire region is 10.8%.
  • 50 Brookings County residents have died of COVID: no deaths were reported this past week compared to 2 deaths in the previous week.
  • 53% of Brookings County residents have received the full vaccine series, and 25% have received a booster or third shot. 

South Dakota (Highest Level of Spread)

  • 236,056 cases: 515 new cases this week vs. 1,849 in the previous week.  Of the new cases this past week:
    • 18% were under 20 years of age (vs. 27% last week)
    • 21% were 20-39 years (vs. 30% last week)
    • 27% were 40-59 years (vs. 22% last week)
    • 34% were 60 years or older (vs. 20% last week)
  • 10,568 South Dakota residents have been admitted to in-state hospitals with COVID: 10 were admitted to in-state hospitals this week vs. 86 last week.  It was impossible to determine the age distribution of those hospitalized this past week due to a large amount of data cleaning (see above).  
  • 147 people currently hospitalized vs. 171 hospitalized last Wednesday (30 currently in the ICU vs. 32 last week). Currently, the percentage of staffed beds statewide that are COVID-occupied is 6.2%.
  • 2,808 South Dakotans have died from COVID:  30 deaths were reported this week vs. 26 in the previous week.  Of those who died this past week:  
    • 1 was less than 20 years of age
    • 4 were 40-59 years of age
    • 25 were 60 years of age & older
  • 53% of South Dakota residents have received the full vaccine series, and 23% have received a booster or third shot. 

USA

  • 80.69 million cases:  427,036 new cases this week vs. 630,629 in the previous week
  • 977,402 total deaths:  14,031 deaths this week vs. 14,102 in the previous week

Worldwide 

  • 438.6 million cases: 10.6 million cases this week vs. 12.1 million in the previous week
  • 5.98 million deaths: 59,377 deaths this week vs. 68,309 in the previous week
