COVID-19: Local, Regional, and National Weekly Summary

Weekly Updates:

Brookings County (low community level based on CDC and moderate based on SDDOH)

  • 8,096 total cases:  3 new cases this week vs. 2 in the previous week.  Of the new cases this past week:
    • 67% were under 20 years of age (vs. 50% in previous week)
    • 33% were 20-39 years (vs. 0% in previous week)
    •   0% were 40-59 years (vs. 0% in previous week)
    •   0% were 60 years or older (vs. 50% in previous week)
  • 221 Brookings County residents have been hospitalized with COVID (decreased by one from last week due to SDDOH data cleaning): 0 new hospitalizations posted this past week compared to 0 in the previous week. Currently, the percentage of staffed beds that are COVID-occupied in the Sioux Empire region is 4.0%.
  • 52 Brookings County residents have died of COVID: 1 death was reported this past week compared to no deaths in the previous week.
  • 53% of Brookings County residents have received the full vaccine series, and 25% have received a booster or third shot.   

South Dakota (low community level based on CDC definition)

  • 237,246 cases: 137 new cases this week vs. 154 in the previous week.  Of the new cases this past week:
    • 23% were under 20 years of age (vs. 26% in previous week)
    • 19% were 20-39 years (vs. 22% in previous week)
    • 18% were 40-59 years (vs. 14% in previous week)
    • 40% were 60 years or older (vs. 38% in previous week)
  • 10,731 South Dakota residents have been admitted to in-state hospitals with COVID: 14 were admitted to in-state hospitals this week vs. 24 last week.  Of the new hospital admissions this past week:
    • 14% were under 20 years of age (vs. 4% in previous week)
    • 22% were 20-39 years (vs. 21% in previous week)
    • 50% were 40-59 years (vs. 21% in previous week)
    • 14% were 60 years or older (vs. 54% in previous week)
  • 41 people currently hospitalized vs. 43 hospitalized last Wednesday (3 currently in the ICU vs. 6 last week). Currently, the percentage of staffed beds statewide that are COVID-occupied is 1.7%.
  • 2,893 South Dakotans have died from COVID:  10 deaths were reported this week vs. 3 in the previous week.  Of those who died this past week:  
    • 1 were 40-59 years of age
    • 9 were 60 years of age & older
  • 53% of South Dakota residents have received the full vaccine series, and 24% have received a booster or third shot.  

USA

  • 81.90 million cases:  213,384 new cases this week vs. 210,359 in the previous week
  • 1,009,390 total deaths:  4,334 deaths this week vs. 5,264 in the previous week 

Worldwide

  • 493.7 million cases: 8.7 million cases this week vs. 10.9 million in the previous week
  • 6.18 million deaths: 26,431 deaths this week vs. 34,545 in the previous week
