PRESS RELEASE: Love Our Health Care Workers Brookings Community Challenge

With the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, health care workers in Brookings are spending more hours on the front lines, treating patients and caring for our community.

“What our health care team needs now, more than ever, is reassurance that our community believes in them, supports them and is behind them,“ said Medical Surgical & Emergency Department Director Karen Weber. “Our entire team – from our medical providers and nurses to our housekeepers and dietary aides to our respiratory therapists, pharmacists, laboratory technologists, chaplain, dietitian, case managers and everyone else in between – have been fighting at the frontlines of the pandemic, patient-after-patient, for nearly three months straight. They’ve seen the impact of COVID-19 on the lives of patients and families and they carry that impact with them in their hearts. Physically seeing community support day-after-day as they work will hopefully help keep our team’s spirits bolstered.”

On Wednesday, December 16, the Brookings community is challenged to fill the Brookings Hospital Inpatient Care waiting room windows with hearts to show appreciation for health care workers. The community is challenged to write messages on at least 1,000 hearts to completely fill the windows. Here’s how to participate in the challenge:

  • Pick up a pre-cut paper heart from the City & County Government Center (OR create your own at home!)
  • Write a kind message to our health care workers on your heart! Decorate and add your personal flair.
  • On December 16, drop your heart in the special mailbox outside Brookings Health System’s 22nd Avenue entrance.
  • Join the event on the City of Brookings and Brookings Health System Facebook pages to see the windows fill up!

This holiday season, the most important thing you can do to help our health care workers is to stay healthy and don’t get sick. Learn more online:
