Bowes Construction, Inc. is the General Contractor.

CONSTRUCTION
Street Closure
Main Avenue South was closed on the morning of Wednesday May 7th and will remain closed through the duration of this project. The detour route is to use 22nd Avenue South. The intersection of Main Avenue South and 20th Street South will close on Monday, June 30th and is scheduled to be closed for approximately 30 days. The intersection of Main Avenue South and 32nd Street South shall remain open throughout the duration of the project. Perimeter traffic control has been installed and additional traffic control will be set up in areas where construction is taking place.

The wet spring we have experienced has slowed construction progress. To help speed up progress, the Contractor has brought in another crew to work on the installation of utilities. Last week one underground crew worked on installing the lift station while the other crew worked on installing sanitary sewer in 26th Street South.

All of the sanitary sewer main is installed in 26th Street South and approximately 500’ of sanitary sewer main is installed in Main Avenue.

The Contractor began installing storm sewer in Main Avenue the week of June 23rd. They started near the low point where the drainage crosses Main Avenue and are working north.

Western Avenue was closed for a couple of days during this week for the installation of the sanitary sewer main and the water main. By June 27th, all work on Western Avenue should be complete and Western Avenue should not need to be closed again during this project.

Upon completion of the installation of the sanitary sewer main, the installation of the water main will follow.

The Main Avenue South and 26th Street South project is crucial for the opening of the Southwest Elementary School and for the future growth of the City of Brookings. On a project of this magnitude, and with the location of the project affecting all traffic leaving or entering the City on Main Avenue South, we appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation during the construction of this project. Banner Associates, Civil Design Inc, the City of Brookings, and Brookings Municipal Utilities will all be monitoring and overseeing varies portions of this project. Safety is our # 1 priority. Along with the Contractor, we ask that you help us complete a safe and successful project.
